“By kind permission of director Anthony Simmons, we present an extract from this delightful portrait of East Enders on holiday in the Essex resort of Southend-on-Sea, shot over two weekends (one a bank holiday) in August 1951. There is no commentary – instead, Simmons cut the film to fit the rhythms of traditional London music-hall songs, this particular one performed by Joan Sterndale-Bennett with Betty Lawrence on the piano.”
