1) So Long, Marianne (Songs of Leonard Cohen, 1967)

Come over to the window, my little darling, I'd like to try to read your palm. I used to think I was some kind of Gypsy boy before I let you take me home.

Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began to laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again.

2) Bird on a Wire (Songs From a Room, 1969)

PUBLICIDADE

Like a bird on the wire, like a drunk in a midnight choir I have tried in my way to be free. Like a worm on a hook, like a knight from some old fashioned book I have saved all my ribbons for thee. If I, if I have been unkind, I hope that you can just let it go by. If I, if I have been untrue I hope you know it was never to you.

3) Famous Blue Raincoat (Songs Of Love and Hate, 1971)

Ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much older Your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder You'd been to the station to meet every train And you came home without Lili Marlene

Publicidade

And you treated my woman to a flake of your life And when she came back she was nobody's wife.

Well I see you there with the rose in your teeth One more thin gypsy thief Well I see Jane's awake --

She sends her regards.

4) Is This What You Wanted (New Skin For The Old Ceremony, 1974)

You were the promise at dawn, I was the morning after. You were Jesus Christ my Lord, I was the money lender. You were the sensitive woman, I was the very reverend Freud. You were the manual orgasm, I was the dirty little boy. And is this what you wanted to live in a house that is haunted by the ghost of you and me?

Is this what you wanted ...

5) Death of a Ladies' Man (Death of a Ladies' Man, 1977)

So the great affair is over but whoever would have guessed it would leave us all so vacant and so deeply unimpressed It's like our visit to the moon or to that other star I guess you go for nothing if you really want to go that far.

6) The Gypsy's Wife (Recent Songs, 1979)

Too early for the rainbow, too early for the dove These are the final days, this is the darkness, this is the flood And there is no man or woman who can't be touched But you who come between them will be judged

And where, where is my Gypsy wife tonight?...

7) Dance Me To The End of Love (Various Positions, 1984)

Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin Dance me through the panic 'til I'm gathered safely in Lift me like an olive branch and be my homeward dove Dance me to the end of love Dance me to the end of love Oh let me see your beauty when the witnesses are gone Let me feel you moving like they do in Babylon Show me slowly what I only know the limits of Dance me to the end of love

8) I'm Your Man (I'm Your Man, 1988)

Ah but a man never got a woman back Not by begging on his knees Or I'd crawl to you baby And I'd fall at your feet And I'd howl at your beauty Like a dog in heat And I'd claw at your heart And I'd tear at your sheet I'd say please, please I'm your man

9) The Future (The Future, 1982)

You don't know me from the wind you never will, you never did I'm the little jew who wrote the Bible I've seen the nations rise and fall I've heard their stories, heard them all but love's the only engine of survival Your servant here, he has been told to say it clear, to say it cold: It's over, it ain't going any further And now the wheels of heaven stop you feel the devil's riding crop Get ready for the future: it is murder

10) A Thousand Kisses Deep (Ten New Songs, 2001)

The ponies run, the girls are young, The odds are there to beat. You win a while, and then it's done - Your little winning streak. And summoned now to deal With your invincible defeat, You live your life as if it's real, A Thousand Kisses Deep.

11) The Letters (Dear Heather, 2004)

Publicidade

You never liked to get The letters that I sent. But now you've got the gist Of what my letters meant. You're reading them again, The ones you didn't burn. You press them to your lips, My pages of concern. I said there'd been a flood. I said there's nothing left. I hoped that you would come. I gave you my address.

12) Going Home (Old Ideas, 2012)

I love to speak with Leonard He's a sportsman and a shepherd He's a lazy bastard Living in a suit

But he does say what I tell him Even though it isn't welcome He just doesn't have the freedom To refuse

He will speak these words of wisdom Like a sage, a man of vision Though he knows he's really nothing But the brief elaboration of a tube

13) Almost Like The Blues (Popular Problems, 2014)

I have to die a little Between each murderous thought And when I'm finished thinking I have to die a lot There's torture and there's killing And there's all my bad reviews The war, the children missing Lord, it's almost like the blues

14) Treaty (You Want It Darker, 2016)

I've seen you change the water into wineI've seen you change it back to water, tooI sit at your table every nightI try but I just don't get high with youI wish there was a treaty we could signI do not care who takes this bloody hillI'm angry and I'm tired all the timeI wish there was a treaty, I wish there was a treatyBetween your love and mine
